THE EXPEDITION
Over the course of five weeks, Vinson of Antarctica sailed from the Falklands to South Georgia to support a demanding sail–ski–climb expedition retracing the historic Shackleton Traverse. The journey combined offshore passage making in Southern Ocean conditions with glacier travel and remote expedition logistics, placing continuous demands on both vessel and crew.
On the return passage, the yacht encountered a powerful low-pressure system. What began as light airs quickly built into sustained gale-force winds, with gusts exceeding 50 knots and seas forecast to reach eight metres. Snow squalls reduced visibility, and the vessel was pushed into full storm configuration.
