Tony Castro Yacht Design joined a conference hosted by Boat International at the National Geographic Society, exploring opportunities for collaboration between yacht owners and the scientific community.

Tony Castro participated in a one-day conference at the National Geographic Society, organised by Boat International, focused on the potential for yacht owners to support scientific research.

The discussions centred on how privately owned yachts could be made available for short research expeditions, typically lasting one to two weeks. The initiative aims to facilitate collaboration between yacht owners and scientists, enabling valuable fieldwork without requiring dedicated research vessels.

Reflecting on the event, Tony Castro commented:

“Several scientists were present, and it was interesting to hear what they wanted to do and the equipment they required—often not a great deal. It is a concept similar to what ‘Seakeepers’ has been doing in the United States for a number of years. It sounds both interesting and practical for yacht owners, without being overly demanding.”

Tony Castro Yacht Design has a strong interest in this area, particularly through its ongoing development of a 75-metre expedition yacht concept. Engagement with the scientific community provides valuable insight into the practical requirements of such vessels and their potential role beyond leisure cruising.
